They'd arrived at St Mungo's within moment's directed straight up to the Maternity ward but even still it was a bit of a wait, filling out forms and waiting for a room to open up. When one did, Liam set Lara on the gurney the two of the Acolytes wheeled over, Lara still curled up and they followed them down the corridor to her room where she was set on the bed. Lara was upset, that much was clear, and Viki sat beside her brushing aside her hair, trying to keep her calm but she didn't know how much that was working. The acolyte assigned to them tried to encourage Lara to uncurl so she change her into a hospital gown and check hers and the baby's vitals but Lara wouldn't budge. She wouldn't let them touch her. "Lara. They need to check you over. If somethings wrong, they need to see what they can do." Lara just shook her head, face pale. "I want Will..." The words were ground out, voice shakey and the acolyte looked up. 'Will Marrid? One of the Acolytes here?' Viki nodded. 'I'll go see if I can track him down.' Viki nodded greatfully and watched them leave the room, Izzy entering moment later with Lara's overnight bag. |

Will skidded into the room, completely out of breath and his eyes spoke that he was panicking. "What's wrong?" He asked her, and leaned in to kiss her forehead. He looked away from Lara to notice her whole family there too, did they know something he didn't? "Lara, let the healers and acolytes help you, that's the only way we can help the baby." He pleaded with her and took her hand as he nodded for the acolytes to start their examination. |

Everything was happening so quickly, one minute she'd been curled up on the floor by her window seat, her stomach in agony, the next her family were with her, taking care of her and bustling her off to St Mungo's. Lara hated hospitals. She was scared of them even and just wanted Will there with her. Alright, so trying to open that window on her own hadn't been a good idea at all. Probably one of her worst ideas ever. Before she knew it they were ushered into a private room but Lara remained curled up on her side. She didn't want anyone examining her until Will was there with her. He understood all that medical jargon. She didn't. It all sounded so foreign, complicated and it unnerved her. Worried her that she didn't know what they were going to to do her. That and she really was worried. She was only just six months gone. The last set of problems had been worrying enough; this hurt more. Lara heard one of the Acolytes leave in search of Will and it wasn't until she heard him enter the room, heard his voice close by and felt him kiss her forehead that she started to uncurl, eye round, red and puffy from crying. "I'm sorry... I shouldn't have... I was hot and I didn't want to bother anyone so I tried to open the window myself but... I over stretched." Her hands were still curled around her stomach, wincing slightly. "It hurts, Will." She felt suddenly a little embarassed that she hadn't let anyone look at her until Will arrived but she needed that reasurance. Lara's giving his hand a squeeze, she slowly lay back as the acolyte ushered the rest of her family out of the room. Acolyte Grant then set about carefully helping Lara out of her pajamas and into a hospital robe. 'Alright now, Miss West, we're going to check your vitals now. So just sit back and relax and we'll have a Healer in to do a few more thorough tests as soon as we can." Lara bit her lip and nodded, lying back against the pillows, squeezing Will's hand as they started the tests. Taking her temperature, checking her blood pressure and heart rate... "Everything's alright, isn't it?" Edited by Lara West, Mar 16 2010, 06:05 PM.

Viki sat on Lara's bedside until Will arrived, moving away to sit across the room with Izzy and Liam while Will moved over to the bed. It was evident he was worried about her. His face was lacking in all color and she watched as he rushed to her side, taking her hand and kissing her forehead, encouraging her to let them help her. He was what Lara wanted and needed. Her daughter was in safe hands and with Will there was going to let the Acolyte look at her. "She's been restless since you left this morning. Tossing and turning, hot one minute, cold the next...restless. We'll be right outside." |

Will was trying to comprehend what was going on and why she was laying down in a bed in the maternity ward. All he got was that, she had been restless, and went to open the window herself, and she was in pain now. Will wasn't mad at her, he knew she would this he should be, but she was getting cabin fever, so he understood her not wanting to leave something like opening a window to her parents. When her family was escorted outside and the Acolyte was done with their check of Lara's vitals, Will climbed onto the bed with her and rubbed her back softly. As much as he knew their son was coming whether he liked it or not, he had to try and reassure her that it would be okay. "Everything will be fine, as soon as the Healer comes, we'll get this all fixed." he murmured softly. |

Declan wasn't on his normal rotation that day. Normally he worked with anything to do with the Dark Arts, but today he was on the maternity floor. It had been a quiet morning, but it didn't take long before an Acolyte tracked him down with a folder. They said it was somewhat of an emergency, so he barely had a chance to glance at it, just catching the patient's name before entering the room. "Good morning, Miss West," he greeted the patient as he entered the room. "My name's Declan Clemens, and I'll be your Healer today. Now, I see you're in here with pains in your stomach, and you're six months along, am I correct?" He paused. "Can you tell me how long you've been having the pains and try to describe what they feel like?" |

When Will climbed up onto the bed beside her, Lara curled up at his side. The pain had subsided for the moment which was a relief but seemed to come and go in bouts. The Healer entered the room a few minutes later and Lara looked up, starting to push herself up into a seated position. "Lara... please." She nodded at his questions, wincing as another bout of pain moved through her stomach. "I was on bed rest and I think I over stretched." Lara rubbed her stomach gently. "It's like.... cramps and my stomach feels tight. I've been in for cramps and spotting before but these are worse. Started about an hur ago." She was worried. "It hurts but it keeps coming and going." Lara bit her lip. "Is something wrong?" |

Declan nodded, listening as he flipped through her chart. She was already on full bed rest for Hydraminos. He doubted this was related to that, but there was always a chance. It was good to know at any rate. "Ok, it sounds like you're having contractions," Declan said. "Now, this isn't always something to be worried about. It could be what's called Braxton-Hicks contractions, which is something a lot of women experience as they start to get further along in their pregnancy. It feels a lot like actual labor, but what it really is is your body practicing for labor," he explained. "You say your water hasn't broke yet. So what we're going to do is set up a fetal heart rate monitor and monitor the baby for any distress first." |

Will was too focused on keeping Lara calm that what Declan said was barely registering. "She said it was because she got up to open the windows and that she's been particularly restless. I mean it makes sense for it to be Braxton-Hicks, but I had read up on Hydraminos, and there's a chance for early labour..." He said, rather bashfully, since he didn't want to worry Lara about it, especially if bedrest was supposed to help. "Is there a chance this will happen again to her if we conceive again?" He felt it was important, because if Lara was in labour, Will was more concerned about her health rather than the baby's. They could always conceive again when the timing was better. |

"Co...contractions?" Lara's eyes widened, hand gripping Will's tighter as she shook her head. "But I can't be. It's too soon. Much too soon, surely..." Healer Clemens said it wasn't anything to necessarily be worried about but she still was. This was her baby. Of course she was worried. Lara just hoped he was right and it was these Braxton hips... whatever they were called. "The labors going to hurt like this?" Lara paled further. Of course, she knew it was going to hurt but of course you can't really tell what it'll be like until you experience it. Lara shook her head silently when asked if her waters had broken. She was sure she'd have noticed that. "Do what you have to," she murmured, when he suggested the fetal heart rate monitor. "What... what if they're showing signs of distress though...? Leslie.. ugh, Healer Law mention there could be possibility of deformities, last time we saw her." She didn't like what she was hearing from either Will or Healer Clemens. Braxton hips... or hick contractions, early labor...Lara was sure she wasn't ready for any of this yet. She thought she still had another few months to read up on her baby books or practice changing nappies and bottle feeding with Andy's twins, or Maddie first. "Early labor!" she breathed, shooting at glance at Will. "I can't... I'm not ready..." Will was going on about conception in the future but Lara was more concerned about the health of the baby they'd already concieved. The little life she had been defending and trying to protect for the last six months. "I just want this baby to be alright," she ground out, hand rubbing her stomach as another patch of soreness passed. |

Declan addressed Will's question first. "Yes, there is a chance for early labor," he said, "but as far as the chances of it happening again? Well, it only occurs in about three to four percent of all pregnancies," he informed them. "So I'd say the chances are low, and as far as conceiving again, so far she's had a relatively healthy pregnancy with no damage to the uterus, so I wouldn't see why not." Then he addressed Lara's questions as he switched on the fetal heart rate monitor. "If the baby's showing signs of distress, it most likely means early labor, and if there weren't any signs of deformities at your last ultrasound, you'll probably be all right. At this point, your baby is fully formed, just gaining weight." He definitely felt for Lara as she was panicking, but it was his job to remain calm and reassure her of things. "And we're going to do everything we can to make sure your baby stays healthy and you have a full-term pregnancy." As the sounds of the heart beat filled the room, Declan knew that it wasn't encouraging. It was a lot faster than it should have been. It sounded...like she was going into labor. "Ok, let me get an ultrasound. The baby's heart is beating a little quickly, but that could very well just be from the stress of the contractions." He just didn't know if it was false labor or real labor. He set up the ultrasound machine quickly, then switching it on, the image of the baby coming onto the screen soon. He tried to keep his expression neutral as he said, "It looks like the baby has moved into position for delivery. See here, the head is now pointed downwards." He switched off the machine and stood up, facing the couple. "I'm sorry," he said, "but it looks like you're going into preterm labor. What I'm going to do is give you a treatment of magnesium sulfate which could stop the contractions and the labor. At the very least, it should delay the labor a little." Hopefully that would work. "In an hour or two, if you're still having contractions or your water has broken, I'm going to start you on a round of steroids which should increase the baby's lung functions for a better chance of survival outside of the womb. In a way, it almost functions as a speeding up of the development process as far as lung capacity is concerned." |

Will bowed his head, this was his worst fear, not so much because he wanted the baby, but he knew the toll it would take on Lara. "We just want you to make sure he's okay, but I want you to make sure Lara is okay. I know she disagrees with this whole heartedly, but we can always have another baby, I can't get another Lara." He said evenly, still holding Lara close. Looking down at Lara, he kissed her forehead again. "I think that if this is what we need to do, then this is what we need to do. If we can't keep him in, then we have to try our best to prepare him." Will conceeded. His mind drifted back to his shift, he needed to go back down to at least arrange something rather than just stay away without an explanation. "Lara, I am going back to my floor, I have to talk to my supervisor, let them know why I left, and see what I can do. If you need me, have one of the acolytes get me, I am on creature-induced injuries" He said before kissing her. Finally looking back at Declan as he got up. "I am okay with whatever has to be done, but Lara gets nervous in hospitals, so if you need me in the short time I am gone, someone can come get me." He told the healer before he stepped out of the room, firstly to tell Lara's family, and secondly to settle the rest of his shift, and to rearrange his next week. Not that he would tell Lara, but he wasn't hopeful. He just had to keep positive for her. |

As much as Lara was now extremely nervous about hte fact that there was a chance of early labor, she was glad to know that the chances of this happening again were low. If they ever had anymore children in the future. It was something they'd have to talk about. Will's words however made her tense. Here they would always disagree. "You know I want this baby. I don't want to think about another one until I know our baby is safe. If I get through this in one piece then it's a bonus." She just hoped that the tests showed that their baby wasn't distressed, that it was just a blip and nothing was really wrong. That it was just these Branston Hick things. Lara didn't want to think about what things would be like if it was bad news. They weren't ready yet. The nursery wasn't done. The crib was in pieces still, she hadn't really chosen a birthing plan.... They weren't prepared. Lara lay back against Will as Declan set up the tests, closing her eyes to listen to the sound of their baby's heartbeat. It sounded... faster than she remembered from the other tests and when Declan mentioned an ultra-sound, Lara opened her eyes watching him curiously. "A bit... quickly? Is everything alright? Are they okay?" He said it was likely stress of the contractions but Lara wasn't sure. Her gaze switched to the image of their baby and she froze hearing Healer Declan's words, swallowing nervously. "Pre-term..? But Im only six months along." Her mind was going a mile a dozen, trying to take in all the infrmation Healer Clemens was giving them. Magnesium... steroids... delaying the labour or preventing it... "How long could it prevent it for...? Will it harm the baby. If it comes to the steroids... it that alright for them?" Will seemed all for the treatments and maybe he was right. If it was all they could do to give their little one a chance, then... Lara nodded. "Alright. Do what you have to." Lara kissed Will back, gripping his hand. "Wait, you're going? Can't someone else go talk to them for you?" Of course, she guessed she understood he needed to and talk to the supervisor himself, she just didn't want to be left on her own. Of course, there were the Healers and Acolytes but she wanted family. "Send Mum or Izzy... or even Liam in. Okay?" she asked as Will got up and left the room before turning back to Healer Clemens. "Be honest with me... please. What.... What are our baby's chances? Really?" She trailed off waiting for some sort of answer and then it dawned on her what Will had said. Just subtly but she'd caught it. 'We just want you to make sure he's okay...' and 'If we can't keep him in, then we have to try our best to prepare him...' They were having a boy? A boy! The corners of Lara's mouth curled up, eye watering despite herself and the situation. They were having a boy. A baby boy. Of course, she might have misheard him and would check as soon as he got back... but a boy! |

Declan nodded to Will as he left. He'd be sure to get him if something went wrong, but for now all he could do was dose Lara with the magnesium sulfate and pray it worked. Privately, he thought Will's reaction to all of this was strange: they could always have another baby? He...personally didn't really agree with the sentiment. Of course, he was also thinking about it like if that were his and Kel's babies: he already loved them, and he didn't think he could ever be so...blasé about the whole thing. But he was just the Healer, and it wasn't his place to comment on that sort of thing. He was just working on staying neutral and calm and making sure he was doing all he could to help Lara and the baby. "If this works to stop the labor," he addressed Lara, "then we'll monitor you overnight and then send you home to be on full bed rest again, where you'd hopefully be able to stay until you're full term." As he was speaking, he was injecting the drug into the IV that she already had set up. "If not, then yes, we'll give the baby steroids, get through the delivery, and then go from there for post-natal care in the NICU." He really hoped it didn't come for that. "Ok, you might feel a little tired or disoriented after this," he said. "Don't worry about that: that's a normal side-effect and no cause for alarm. You also might experience dry-mouth or a sensitivity to light. Again, none of this is serious, and while it may be a little uncomfortable, it's no cause for concern." He made sure she had a pitcher of water and a glass by her bed, as well as ice chips. "Unless you have any more questions, if you're all settled, I'll come back and check on you in an hour to see how you're doing. If your water breaks before then, page one of the Acolytes immediately, which you can do by pressing this button," he instructed, showing her which one to push. Will came back about 30 minutes later, changed into his street clothes, yet his hair was still pulled back. He looked mildly troubled, he slid the chair over to Lara and sat down beside her. "How're you feeling?" He asked, taking her hand. He couldn't stand seeing her in the hospital, but at least here the baby - their son - would recieve proper attention. "My supervisor gave me until next weekend off, regardless of what happens today. Have you been having more contractions, or have your waters broken?" He asked her seriously, but there was a hint of nerves in his tone. |

Lara guessed she shouldn't be surprised that she had to stay over night. Something was wrong and the baby needed to be carefully monitored...Still, when Declan mentioned the possibility of staying at the hospital, Lara kept silent, nodding. She hated hospitals. You never had to stay in if something wasn't wrong. Going back on bed rest if the magnesium did work to stop the labor didn't sound quite so bad anymore. Keeping her gaze averted as he injected the magnesium into the IV. "There won't be complications with the labor.. if.. if there is one. Right?" Labor when the baby were perfectly fine sounded daunting enough but if there were things wrong already... She tried to push the thoughts out of her head. Lara didn't want to think of their baby... their son (if she'd heard right) in the NICU. She listened to Declan's explanation about the affects of the magnesium and settled further under the covers, glancing the water, ice chips and call button, nodding. The magnesium was already starting to take affect and she could feel the tiredness sinking in. Lack of sleep from tossing and turning all morning and the meds. "I might try and sleep a little. Thank you." Lara offered a small smile as Declan left, closing her eys, hoping the magnesium would do it's job. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Lara had somehow managed to doze off for a little bit, sleeping in fits and starts but she was still a bit restless - the occassional contraction - braxton hicks or otherwise - interupting her sleep. She was dozing when she heard the door to her room open and someone come in, moving one of the chairs closer. Cracking open a heavy eyelid, she offered a very small and sleepy smile noting who it was and shrugged. "Not much different. Sleepy... a bit foggy but that's routine with the magnesium apparently." She felt his hand around hers and gave it a squeeze. "I'm still getting the pains, ugh... contraction and I'm still restless but my waters haven't broken yet. I think they're getting worse..." Lara listened as Will explained about the time off his supervisor had given him. She caught the hint of nerves in his tone and her expression was one of worry. "You think something's wrong, don't you?" A little more awake, Lara tried to push herself back up so she was seated a little higher, pausing a moment later to whimper as another small contraction passed through her gripping Will's hand. "This is going to get worse, isn't it?" There was a slight tremor in her voice. "Will? He is going to be alright, isn't he? Our baby? It's a boy, isn't it?" |

When Lara notified him that the contractions hadn't got better but rather worse, Will pinched the bridge of his nose, he got a sudden headache. "If you're tired, then sleep. And if you want to know, which I am sure you don't, I didn't think the contractions would stop, but I had to hope they would." He told her as she gripped his hand from a contraction. "Just breathe deeply, don't focus on the pain." He tried soothing. Helping her turn over Will laid beside her, letting her continue to grip his hand while the other hand rubbed her back diligently. "Surprise...." He said, half smiling. He knew Lara didn't want to know, but it slipped. "I really hope he will be okay." Will murmured into her hair. "And I found Carter and he is sending Gabe and Leslie an owl as well as telling my family." He said. Will had the feeling this was no "episode" or Braxton-Hicks, so if their son was to come today, Will had no idea how long he'd last if at all and it was important for their families to meet him. Will also had no idea why, but he wanted Ralston to see his son, prove to him that although he was an accident, Will made a good choice coming back. And it didn't hurt that Ralston would put the little guy on a pedestal as Will was. |

"I've tried sleeping. Slept for maybe twenty minutes only, if that. The contractions kept waking me up." She grumbled, trying to get comfortable as she listened to Will. Lara was watching him carefully. He was right. As soon as he voiced is fears Lara wished she hadn't asked. "You don't think their braxtin hicks contractions, do you?" She didn't know why she was still asking questions, if she knew she probably wuldn't like the answers. They were interupted by a contraction and Lara tried to follow Will's advice. "Deep.... breaths..." she repeated, trying the control her breathing, listeninng to Will's soothing tones, still gripping his hand. Slowly, the contraction started to ease and subside and Lara rolled over with Will's help trying to settle back down and get comfortable again. His hand rubbing her back was strangely soothing and she closed her eyes a moment, still listening a smile curling across her lips at Will's word, now that teh pain had started to subside a bit. Lara didn't care that Will had let slip the gender of their baby. She might have chosen not to know at the last scan but now, she didn't care/ She wanted to know. "Mmmmm, a little boy. A son. An heir. Do your family know we're having a boy? Do my family know?" Lara was curious. She'd said Will could tell anyone as long as no one told her. "Is it still Dominic or Lucas then? Or...can we wait until we see the little guy for ourselves? Make sure he looks like a Lucas or a Dominic before comitting." She fell silent a few moments, mulling over all that was actually happening. "I really hope he's alright as well, I.... dont know what I'd do if anything happened." Both their families would know she was in hospital by now, then. "What did he say? Ugh..." Lara grumbled, shifting restless. "It's too hot now." |

Rubbing still, Will kissed the back of her neck. "You'll be okay, he'll be okay, and by the looks of the ultrasound, he looks like a Dominic." Will said confidently, little Dominic Marrid or West if that's what she wanted to name him. "Carter knows, so therefore Andy does, but I don't think my father or brothers know." He said, worried. Oddly enough though, he felt like he needed Ralston. Even though he rarely got along with his father, he needed him now. "Carter says he hopes this will be over, and we can go home tomorrow." He said, flicking his wand and having a piece of paper fold itself into a fan to fan Lara. |

Lara hummed happily with the soothing rubbing on her back and Will kissing the back of her neck. She would almost say she was relaxing, if it weren't for feeling uncomfortable and hot. "Dominic Marrid..." she murmured with a small smile lowering one hand to stroke her stomach. Although, in the last half hour the wheels had been turning and she'd been thinking over other ideas for names as well. She was glad to hear Carter and Andy knew and Leslie and Gabe had been notified. She was jsut curious to see Will looked worried his father and other brothers didn't know what was happening. They hadn't seemed to show many signs of interest... except Ralston, who'd been adament they get married. If anything Ralston and Will's other brothers made Lara uneasy, if only because she wasn't as comfortable with the strict Pureblood etiquate they kept. "Why don't you owl them then? Or go get them. Maybe they want to be around when their grandson and nephew is born." Okay, even with the paper fan fanning her, Lara could not sit still. Despite Will rubbing her back and holding her hand, Lara had to untanlge herself as another contraction started to build up, sitting up back against the pillow gripping Will's hand and trying to breathe deeply. This one was a little more intense. "Why does it have to hurt so much?" Lara whimpered, still deep breathing as the pain subsided again. "I can't do this all nig...Will!" Lara froze, eyes wide staring at the lump that was her legs under the cover as a sudden gushing was felt, wet. "I... I... I think I just wet myself..." Her voice was shakey, panicked. |
